On Wednesday, 2 April 2008, the President of the United States, Mr. George W. Bush, delivered a speech at the CEC Palace addressed to the Romanian people, as a preamble to the works of the NATO Summit in Bucharest. President Bush was joined by the First Lady Laura Bush and by the U.S. Secretary of State, Ms. Condoleezza Rice.
After extending his gratitude and appreciation to CEC for hosting the event, President Bush focused in his speech on the Summit agenda, including several issues of interest for the Romanian people. The White House leader specified the official stance of the United States in relation to the hot topics of the Alliance, such as the enlargement decision, the mission in Afghanistan or the need for an antimissile shield in Europe. The President praised Romania’s contribution to NATO operations and decisions, by rendering homage to the Romanian troops for their bravery and sacrifice.
The event was attended by an audience of approximately 400 persons from Romania and abroad: current or former heads of state, prime-ministers, ministers, the NBR Governor, high-ranked state officials, ambassadors, media representatives, etc. Part of the Bank’s staff was also present..
